Shrewsbury is a charming town on the river Severn with an extensive history. (You need only read its wikipedia page!) Its medieval architecture, such as the Castle, the Abbey, and the Old Market Hall, still stand amidst the modern developments. The river cuts through the town and can be best appreciated with a stroll through the greenery of the Quarry Park, or take a boat trip to see the town from a different perspective. For culture, there is the Shrewsbury Flower Show, one of the oldest and largest horticultural shows in the country, or the Shrewsbury Folk Festival, a celebration of folk music and dance.
Oswestry is an ancient market town on the English-Welsh border boasting outstanding independent shops, markets and superb eateries, all in a historic setting. In 2023, Oswestry was thrilled to be designated "BEST LARGE TOWN IN BRITAIN" at the national BRITAIN IN BLOOM awards. Home to Powis and Chirk Castles, fascinating industrial heritage, scenic canals and the unique UNESCO World Heritage Site of Pontcysyllte Aqueduct.
Ludlow is a thriving market town and architectural gem that's busy with events and festivals throughout the year. The historic town centre and the 11th century castle, now host to many major music and comedy events yearly, are situated above the River Teme. Ludlow is an excellent base for walking and cycling; as well as exploring the rest of Shropshire and the Welsh Marches, and has a reputation for the quality of its food and drink with local restaurants and cafes encouraged by the area's abundance of quality food & drink producers. A fact showcased every September when the town is filled with food lovers from all over the UK, and beyond for the Ludlow Food and Drink Festival.
The Shropshire Council area has a completely comprehensive education system, whilst in the borough of Telford and Wrekin there are two selective schools, both of which are located in Newport, and both of which are ranked within the top thirty schools in the country. In Telford itself is Thomas Telford School, one of the highest ranked comprehensive schools in England. There are three sixth-form colleges located in Shropshire, two of which provide sixth-form education as well as secondary education.
There are three institutions of higher education in Shropshire; the Telford campus of the University of Wolverhampton, Harper Adams University, and the Shrewsbury campus of the University of Chester.
Shropshire is connected to the rest of the United Kingdom via a number of road and rail links. The county's main transport hub is Shrewsbury, through which many significant roads and railways pass and join.
Major roads in the county include the M54 motorway, which connects Shropshire to the rest of the motorway network, and more specifically to the West Midlands county. The A5 also runs through the county, in an east–west direction. Other major trunk roads in the county include the north–south A49, the A53 and the A41.
There are a number of major railway lines running through the county, and Shrewsbury is a central hub for 5 major railway lines taking passengers all over the country.
